Former school to be transformed into apartments

The Home City Development Inc. (HCDI) will be converting the Elias Brookings Elementary School in Springfield into an affordable housing complex of 42 units.

The housing will be made available as workforce housing, and to people with disabilities, those who are homeless, clients of the Department of Mental Health, and for workforce housing.

Brochure printing is often used to provide more details about such apartment units and their amenities.

HCDI has received grants from several sources to fund this project. It will receive $1m of low-income tax credits, funds from the City of Springfield HOME and Community Preservation Act, project-based rental vouchers, federal and state historic tax credits, and $4.4m of soft debt.

Tom Kegelman, Executive Director of HCDI, expressed his gratitude that his company can provide affordable and decent housing to those residents of the city whose housing is becoming increasingly insecure at this time. He added his appreciation to the many others who helped to make this project possible, including Domenic J. Sarno, mayor of Springfield; Peter Serafino, Director of Real Estate Development at HCDI, and the other partners, teams, and people who supported its development process.

HCDI was founded by the Springfield Chamber of Commerce in 1968 and is a non-profit developer of mixed-use and multi-family properties in Western Massachusetts. It has facilitated stability and growth in the community over the years through collaboration with many partners and residents.
