The city of Springfield has received a grant of close to $50,000 from the federal Department of Justice for the Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program.
This will enable the city to purchase more BolaWrap devices and cassettes, which will aid police officers in safely handing potentially dangerous situations. The funding will also cover the cost of training 108 supervisors and officers in the use of the technology. News of such funding and its benefit to a department and the community is often made known with flyer printing.
These innovative tools will provide those in the Springfield Police Department with a way of helping them reduce the risk of injury to suspects, officers, and bystanders.
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno expressed his thanks to the Secretary of Public Safety and Security Terrence Reidy, Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll, and Governor Maura Healy in their support, partnership, and investment in this program, which will help to increase the safety of the public across the Commonwealth. The mayor also commended Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood for her support of this proactive piece of equipment that is potentially a lifesaving device.
Police Superintendent Clapprood said that this will be a tool that can help officers to de-escalate situations that may be unsafe and cause harm to police officers and others.
