The Springfield City Council has approved the building of a Tesla car dealership in East Springfield. This will be the first such dealership in western Massachusetts.
Jose Delgado, Springfield City Councilor, said the original proposal was to build one in Chicopee but these plans were withdrawn by Tesla. Then Tesla moved its request to Springfield and wanted to build just a repair center but recently added a sales component.
The dealership will be on Cadwell Drive which was once home to the American Career Institute, which has been vacant for over 10 years. The store and service center will span 37,500 square feet and will include a parking lot that will be able to house 360 vehicles. Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform residents and others in the region about such new developments.
The East Springfield Neighborhood Council also endorsed the plan. President of the Council, Kathy Brown, said that the Council required several conditions to be met to build the dealership. Tesla will need to restrict the use of charging stations for customers and business purposes only and minimize light pollution affecting surrounding areas. Tesla will also need to preserve mature trees and an existing fence on the property.
Brown said that this will be an excellent economic development opportunity for the area and the city. She added that the dealership will bring 30 jobs to the area.
