The ‘X’, which is where Dickenson Street, Belmont Avenue, and Sumner Avenue in downtown Springfield converge, will be undergoing a complete overhaul.
Chris Cignoli, Director of the Department of Public Works for Springfield, said that after many years of surveys of the site and neighborhood meetings, the project is about to get underway. The cost is expected to be $6m.
Cignoli commented that pedestrians trying to cross the ‘X’ can be problematic. There are too many traffic signals, not enough crosswalks, and a lot of people simply trying to go back and forth.
The three traffic signals at the intersection are in proximity to each other right now, and they will be spread out along Sumner Avenue as part of the project. Two more that come into the intersection will be eliminated and some streets will be rerouted.
Neighbors of the intersection and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) have approved the plan. MassDOT will be covering the costs of the project. There will be one more public hearing on the plan so that neighbors can comment on the final plan. Cignoli added that construction can begin in 2020.
