Combined elementary school opens in Springfield

The new DeBerry-Swan School is now open in Springfield.

Two independent elementary schools operating within one building, it spans 155,000 square feet and is three stories tall. It can accommodate close to 1,000 students and include classrooms for pre-school students.

It is a replacement for the Homer Street and DeBerry schools, each of which was over 100 years old. The school features state-of-the-art technology in addition to an art room, a music room, a media room, a gymnasium, and cafeteria.

The principal of Swan, Catherine Roberts, said that such features will further the growth of students from an emotional, social, and academic standpoint. She said that so far, both the teachers and the community have remarked on the beauty of the school and its wonderful amenities.

Sharonda Hector, principal of DeBerry, said that her teachers have been equally excited about the building and will use that excitement to engage caretakers and parents to get more involved in the education of their children. Hector added that that they will be reaching out to parents to let them know how they can get involved in their children’s education. Such schools may turn to local Print shops to help with creating Brochures, Booklets, and other printed materials with more information about such topics.

Barbara Gresham, member of the Springfield School Committee, said the new school adds splendor to the community.
