Childrens gift charity to be held near Springfield

The Toy for Joy charity will be returning to the Springfield area for its 99th year.

This campaign is a collaboration of the Salvation Army Springfield Citadel, MassLive, El Pueblo Latino, and The Republican, with the goal of raising $150,000 by Christmas Eve. Partners from the media assisting with the campaign will be The Westfield News and Reminders Publishing. Gifts and Books to children in need in Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden counties are provided through the charitable campaign.

Social service director for the Salvation Army Springfield Citadel, Danielle LaTaille, said they are looking forward to ensuring that families have gifts for their children this year on Christmas.

Families in Holyoke and Springfield will be able to register online while those in Greenfield will need to register in person. Executive editor of The Republican, Cynthia G. Simison, said that registration is important so that these gifts will be able to be brought to these children. Announcements of such programs and more information about how to register for them is often made available throughout a community with poster printing. LaTaille added that once the registration process is completed, they will go through the signups to look for potential duplicates and children over the age of 16 and then contact the qualified families.

Springfield is expecting to serve 1,000 families this holiday season, with Holyoke expecting around 800 families and Greenfield about 100 families.
