Celebration to honor Springfield parks department

A series of special events are being planned to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the Parks Department of the city of Springfield and 125 years of Springfield Forestry later this month, with a wide range of family-friendly events at Forest Park.

The celebration will begin on a Thursday night with the unveiling of the Theodore Geisel Bas Relief. Theodore Geisel was the park superintendent who served the city the longest and Theodore K. Geisel, his son, who is better known as Dr. Seuss.

Friday will be a senior luncheon with bocce lessons and lawn bowling. Lunch will be free for seniors, with a live performance by the Patterson’s Hipptown Band.

There will be a wealth of events on Saturday. They begin with an open house and tours of the Monkey House, the Carriage House at the Barney Estate, and the Clifford Phaneuf Education Center in Forest Park. Bocce lessons will be held, and Dean Davis the magician will hold two sessions, one at noon and another at 1:00pm.

Additional highlights will include Forester Alex Sherman leading a talk on 125 Years of City Forestry at the Clifford Phaneuf Education Center, a fire truck display by the Springfield Fire Department, and the Happy Face Painter will be around from noon to 3:00pm.

Local Print shops often assist with printing schedules and other key details about such special events.

This celebration will take place from Thursday, October 12 through Saturday, October 15.
