What's Happening in Arlington Heights, IL…

Charity 5K to be filled with zest

Local organization Lemons of Love (LOL) will host a 5K fundraiser to support cancer patients in nearby Mount Prospect early next month.

LOL founder Jill Swanson, a native of Arlington Heights, was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer in 2014 at the age of 47. While in treatment, she would notice that many cancer patients were arriving by bus or taxi and were alone while undergoing their chemotherapy. This is when the idea for her non-profit Lemons of Love became a reality, and she created goodie bags for the patients containing gifts like lemon drops, lotions, organic tea, an LOL mug, and superhero socks.

This inaugural 5K has been organized to raise funds for the nonprofit to continue to support the needs of cancer patients nationwide. The event is family friendly and, while children wait for loved ones to cross the finish line, they can sit at the art table and draw pictures to be used on the Lemons of Love bags. These images could be duplicated by a local printing company to support the hundreds of bags the organization will make.

The event will be held on Sunday, October 11 in front of the Chase Bank building in Mount Prospect. Registration is available on line at Lemonsoflove.org at a cost of $40 for adults. The proceeds from the 5K event will go to helping Lemons of Love create more bags for patients.
