What's Happening in Arlington Heights, IL…

Arlington Heights celebrates its trees

Arbor Day has been around since 1872, and this year Arlington Heights will be celebrating it in one of our local parks.

The Arbor Day Art contest is in full swing and kids from pre-K through grade 6 are invited to color and submit their tree trunk graphic design provided by the Arlington Heights Parks District to any local community center or Olympic Indoor Swim Center. The little artists can use a variety of media, such as pen and ink, chalk, watercolors or even markers.

There will be a winner in each of the three age categories Pre-L through first grade, grades two through four, and grades five and six. Winners will receive $25 gift coupons to attend Arlington Heights Park District programs.

The event will open with a program and refreshments. Randall Recklaus will welcome everyone and introduce the dignitaries. A special performance will be given by the 5th Grade Chorus of Edgar Allan Poe School.

President of the Arlington Heights Park District’s Board of Commissioners, Maryfran H. Leno will then give a few remarks and the Mayor of the Village of Arlington Heights, Thomas Hayes will give the proclamation. A Tree City USA Plaque will be presented, and Arbor Day gifts will be given. The winner of the tree drawing contest will be announced, and the event will end with a tree planting ceremony.

Arbor Day will be April 27 from 9:00 am until 11:00 am at Ravens Park, 2913 N. Mitchell Ave.
