The 36-year-old won the title due to her practices in conservation, agricultural enterprise achievements, and community involvement.
She will go on as a finalist to the national competition and commented that winning the award is surreal, explaining how she felt like she was dreaming.
Monahan demonstrated a love for the farm life early working on Seymour farm, owned by her grandparents, each summer as a child. She went on to complete Nonneweg High School's agricultural program, where she met her husband Fred. They started the Stone Gardens together in 1998.
The farmers expressed concern about losing profits to salespeople who resold their produce at a higher retail price. This frustrated Monahan, who said:
"They're just like grocery stores on wheels. That was just something that pushed me to want to be better at what I did.”
It sparked her commitment to stand out and give the community more access to their food by selling on a retail level.
Stone Gardens might benefit from a relationship with a business card printing company, which could expand its customer base and open more retail opportunities through other businesses. Transportation and advertising companies may be able to give the farm a farther reach.
