Mark Lauretti, mayor of Shelton, recognized the Division 10 Shelton Vikings cheering squad on March 24.
The cheerleaders earned a title on a national level for winning all of their attended competitions. They also received a large trophy and an award certificate at a dinner hosted in their honor. Among those in attendance was the Shelton Board of Education, showing its support for the Vikings squad.
The team is made up of more than 30 girls in fourth or fifth grade, coach Michelle Civale, and assistant coaches Courtney Aurora, Tori Kochiss, Tammy Lupa, Lauren Cisero, and Chrissi Werner. They normally practice three times during the week and demonstrate their routines at the school's football games.
In August, however, the girls had to start getting ready for the year's competitions and practiced almost every weeknight. By October, the cheer squad were the champions of a local competition. In November, the team conquered New England, meaning that they and their families went to Orlando, Florida with the team's coaches for the national American Youth Cheer championships the following month. They outshined older teams with the day's high score and took first place.
A common stunt cheer teams perform during football games is stretching a banner across the locker room entrance so the team can run through it. Banner printing companies hired for the job must make the banner eye-catching, but also suitable and safe for the purpose.
