What's Happening in Shelton, CT…

Eddie Radzion, a senior at Shelton High School, won the shotput Class LL title this year.

This is the second year Radzion has brought home the track title with the Gaels. Like last year, it came down to the final throw, but he had been practicing a new and more advanced technique for a year.

The change meant he was out of practice with the way he normally threw. According to Tony Branca, throwing coach for Shelton, Radzion was scoring high with the new technique but for the championship, they thought it would be best to perform a glide. He increased practicing in preparation.

At the East Sectional in mid-February, Radzion had performed a pair of spinning throws before going back to a glide. At the Class LL competition, Radzion threw the shot, weighing 12lb, and passed the next longest throw by just over eight inches.

At the State Opens, he used only the glide technique to come in third and qualify for the New England championships in Boston. First placed was taken by the favorite, Michael Browning, while second place went to Plainfield’s Collin Martin. However, Radzion threw further than he had recently, setting a new record for his school.

Instead of trophies, many competitions opt for framed certificates made by printing services as awards for competitors. Often, they are less expensive and quick to make, while still looking just as impressive.
