Shelton schools to see solar panel installations

Plans have been announced to place solar panels on four school roofs in Shelton as early as next year. The savings in electricity over two decades is expected to be almost $1.5m.

The city has employed Solar City, a company based in California, to place panels on Sunnyside, Perry Hill, Long Hill, and Elizabeth Shelton schools within 12 to 18 months. They will not charge Shelton for the installation if the city buys the electricity used in the next 20 years.

Project development manager Sarah Hill secured the sale by describing Solar City as "a one-stop shop" in that it takes care of planning the project, designing the panels, and installing fittings. Afterwards, the company monitors the panels and keeps them maintained. When the contract ends, they will remove the panels if desired.

Hill also spelled out the renewable energy tax credits and other ways the school can save money when compare to its current electricity deal.

There were concerns raised about structural integrity and emergency access through the roof, but Hill assured the Board of Education that the roofs passed inspections and the company will train firefighters on solar paneled roof access.
