Shelton ready to raise curtain on theater season

A popular theater in Shelton just announced its upcoming season, kicking off soon.

Center Stage Theatre is celebrating its 20th season with a production of “Guys and Dolls,” the classic musical with lyrics and music by Frank Loesser and book by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling. The show, which won the Tony for Best Musical, opened on Broadway in 1950 and ran for 1,200 performances.

The story of gangsters, gamblers, and girls in New York City has been revived numerous times, and a film version was released in 1955. “Luck Be a Lady” and “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat” are two of the production’s most recognizable songs.

For the fourth year in a row, the theater’s first show will be followed by a junior version, ”Guys and Dolls JR” lasting 60 minutes, and performed by actors in grades five through eight.

Center Stage produces five musicals annually, including one in the summer specifically showcasing young actors between the ages of 14 and 23. The community-based theater is intergenerational and inclusive, and offers educational programs, opportunities for people to get involved by volunteering, in addition to affordable, high-quality productions.

In addition to “Guys and Dolls,” the upcoming shows for 2025 are “The Last Five Years,” “Avenue Q,” “Sister Act” (which will feature younger performers), and “Little Women.” A special Christmas show, “A Center Stage Christmas.”
