Shelton defeats Mercy at soccer championship

Last Thursday, November 1, the girls soccer team from Shelton won the Southern Connecticut Conference Championships against Mercy.

After a goalless 90 minutes, the game held at Ken Strong Stadium and West Haven High School came down to penalty kicks. The Gaels made three and Mercy made two. Penalty kicks have decided three out of the last four SCC championships.

Penalty kicks were all that could separate the two teams, both of whom only lost one match during their league seasons, with those defeats coming against each other. Both teams rigorously practiced penalty kicks in anticipation that the championship would come down to them.

According to Marvin Miller, coach of the Shelton team, his team wanted the championship more but both teams fought with willpower, and losing the previous game in the regular season to the same team was substantial motivation.

Goalkeeper for Shelton and Most Outstanding Player at the SCC, Arianna Malick, believes the win was because the team had worked hard to make the championships and showed pride.

Marcus Harley, coach for Mercy's team, said that it was a heated game with many missed chances by both sides. Mercy received a yellow card and defense played a significant role.
