James "Jimmy" Ryan has been the president of the Shelton Economic Development Corp for 31 years, since he was 32. He will be retiring next year.
Ryan stated that despite the job being so great, he is ready to
move on. Over the years, he has aided the city in becoming a booming commercial area full of job growth. He turned the factories downtown into thriving business buildings through the use of funds through the federal and state governments and competitive grants. Ryan said the secret is responsiveness and preparation. Little wins are the most important because they build up. According to the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments executive director Rick Dunne, as one of the pioneers of using brownfield programs as a development tool, Ryan worked well with money. He was persistent with his goals and was known for getting things done. It will be hard to find someone to fill his shoes.
Living in Ansonia, Ryan will leave on July 1 and wants the person who replaces him to begin four month earlier so work will not be interrupted. He will be spending his time with his wife and two daughters, all nurses.
If Ryan's name was on the Letterheads of the Shelton Economic Development Corp, they will have to redo it with the name of the new president in order for letter recipients to know who to contact in response.
