What's Happening in Shelton, CT…

Fans of live theater who have been waiting months to be able to see a play will soon be able to attend a performance again.

Center Stage Theatre in Shelton will be presenting the classic musical “Godspell” soon. The play is a musical examination of the life of Christ, told as a number of parables, most taken from the Gospel according to Matthew. Musical numbers interrupt the parables; the lyrics of traditional hymns are used with the original music. The ten-member cast is on stage throughout the entire performance.

The show has become a favorite of community theaters and has enjoyed a number of tours throughout the country, but never attained the smash hit status of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” which premiered a year earlier, in 1970. However, “Godspell” was nominated for a Tony for Best Original Score, and indeed has contributed several songs to popular culture, including “Learn Your Lessons Well” and “Day by Day.”

Center Stage Theatre is a community theater that mounts high-quality productions everyone can afford to attend. It also has an educational component and has opportunities for people to volunteer.
