The Shelton Land Conservation Trust has gained four acres of land for a total of 374 acres owned.
The land has been in the Trust's radar for almost 10 years, because development on the property could disrupt the greenway corridor and watershed. Ideas for developing the property have ranged from a gas station with a convenience store, to a space for a catering company.
Mary Beth Banks, the Trust's former president, contacted the owners of the acreage at the time. It was only this year that the two agreed to terms over land on Leavenworth Road in the Means Brook Greenway. Jones Family Farm, Stockmal Woods, and Aquarion Water Company Land are protected properties around the new parcel, and it is near the Nicholdale Farm and George Willis Woods, which the Land Trust owns.
Jones Family Farm and Aquarion Water Company are working together with the Land Trust to preserve the land and use it for forest management and farming. Joseph Welsh, current president of the Land Trust, believes having a farmer with a new piece of land is a bonus since, they are experienced with caring for land. In addition, having a water company as part of the deal brings in watershed conservation expertise.
