Graduation back at Finn Stadium

Shelton High School Class of 2018 will have their graduation ceremony at Finn Stadium due to a petition.

Originally, the graduation ceremony was scheduled to be at Nolan Field in Ansonia. The stadium was putting in new football field artificial turf along with having other renovations. Chris Clouet, superintendent of schools, disclosed the changes early in the year.

According to member of the schoolboard Jose Goncalves, students and parents did not have any part in the decision, so parents made their concerns known to the board. He stated that it was not a logical decision because Nolan Field was not local. Goncalves' son Nicholas is one of the seniors affected by the change.

Tiana Boccuzzi and Justin Hafele headed a petition for keeping graduation at Finn Stadium. It received over 1,000 signatures. Hafele commended this, saying students spoke up for themselves when given the inspiration and a platform, noting that the petition demonstrated how important it was to graduate in Shelton for seniors. Boccuzzi added that the community made the difference, and she is grateful for getting to graduate at home thanks to students and parents.

Mayor Lauretti, the committee for Public Improvement Building, and the architect will pause renovations in June for three days. Students are expected to graduate on June 21, or June 22 if it rains.
