Food drive to benefit Spooner House

In a few days, residents of the lower Naugatuck Valley can donate food for the 14th Annual Valley Has Heart Drive. They hope to raise $5,000 and have donations that will last through the coming winter.

Proceeds will go toward the Spooner House in Shelton and can be dropped off at the Adams Hometown Markets in Shelton and Derby, and the Stop and Shops in Shelton and Ansonia. Each set of stores will compete for most donations, Shelton and Ansonia Stop and Shop stores will be sponsored by LaMorte, Hillman, Dworken, and Sterczala, P.C. The drive at the Adam's Market in Derby will be hosted by Hairy Dog Garage as it has for the previous four years. Adam's Market in Shelton does not yet have a sponsor.

According to Spooner House Executive Director Susan Agamy, most donations are during the winter, so there are not many donations left by April. She adds that children do not have the reduced price meals schools provide in the summer, so there is greater need for donations. The fundraiser aids the Spooner House in keeping shelved stocked.

Last year, residents donated over 2,700 nonperishables and more than $4,500, with the Stop and Shop in Shelton bringing in the most funds, the Ansonia store coming in second, and the Adams Market in Derby third.

This Saturday, April 9, donations will be collected from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The stores could hire a Print company to make wish lists for customers looking to shop for needed donations.
