Fire companies are hot stuff at fair

Two firefighting groups from Shelton won trophies at the recent Bridgewater Country Fair.

The Best Appearing Rescue award went to the Huntington Fire Company #3, while the aerial fire truck belonging to White Hills Fire Company #5 won it the Best Appearing Aerial to go with its Best Appearing Fire Company in Coats trophy.

Huntington Fire Company first lieutenant Jason Mitchell stated that earning awards is something of a tradition for his company. His team won the 1987 state championship when it had a new truck, and has won awards at three other parades for the aerial truck this year. The team made sure the aerial truck looked just right through 40 hours of preparation by the 40 members of the company. Mitchell added that their awards were due to the efforts of all the team members, five of whom marched in the parade at the fair and were able to rekindle their friendships with firefighters from other areas.

White Hills, on the other hand, had never won a trophy before this year, and 23 members of the team marched in the parade. Kevin McCue, first lieutenant of the company, said they represented the years prior as well as this year. When the parade started four years ago, there were only a few firefighters and a truck.

Next year, fire companies in the parade can hire a banner printing company to make items to display in the parade.
