Half a century ago, Zita Carrano gave her dance students a taste of professional dancing when she took them on a field trip to Manhattan. This month, she was able to reunite with a student who was on that trip and made it big - Bonnie Marie.
Marie is now in her early seventies, with Carrano being in her mid-eighties. The two met and shared stories in Carrano's Stratford home. Carrano's dance school used to be in Bridgeport, but it has since moved to Shelton and been renamed Kicks Dance Center.
Bonnie Marie, or Marie Buonaguro, started dance lessons at the age of three and left the dance school when she was a teenager to pursue her young career. It did not take long for her to become a well-known professional dancer. She danced with celebrities, including the Crosby Boys, and at many popular areas of the age. However, her career was short and she only danced for four years. It ended in 1962, two years after she married.
Marie commented that, during her career, she never stopped. She met stars like Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra at nightclubs in New York. She performed at the 500 Club and the Golden Slipper as well.
