The town of Derby, one of Shelton's closest neighbors, will be home to a Big Y grocery store in 2019.
The store will take up 60,000 square feet out of the 177,000 feet of the town center on New Haven Avenue, according to Big Y officials. The center used to have a Walmart before it closed last year after being in business for 15 years, with the building now being remodeled for reopening. This will be the 71st location of the grocery store chain headquartered in Springfield, Massachusetts. Big Y has locations in Massachusetts but also many in Connecticut, including Shelton and Ansonia.
According to a press release by Charles D'Amour, the president and CEO of Big Y, the company is eager to serve the community and expand business in the state. Besides the construction and remodeling crew, the grocery store will need over 150 job positions filled at the part and full time level. At the location will be a butcher shop with full service, a 500-item produce area with local stock, prepared meals, seafood from the New England area, and a full pharmacy.
Derby currently does not have many grocery stores, with Aldi and ShopRite being the only available options until now.
