Last month, the Southington Aqua Turf Club was the site of the 33rd annual Connecticut Association of Schools and the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete Banquet to honor outstanding athletic students from local schools.
About 350 high school seniors and athletes from Shelton and Derby attended as CIAC Scholar Athlete honorees. James Hunter and Virginia Lewis were the students from Shelton High School. A male and female athlete from every high school in the program is honored. These students, whose school has nominated them, have shown excellence in their athletic and academic lives, having set the bar high for themselves and act as a role model for others. A student from Darien also received the Michael H. Savage Spirit of Sport Award.
Although the CAS-CIAC has several events annually, officials say that this one is the biggest. Over 1,700 people, including coaches, school staff, students, and their families were in attendance to congratulate and support the recognized athletes. Trinity College's Track and Field Coach and Program Manager for School Health Dr. Bonnie Edmondson gave an address, and the event was hosted by Bob Picozzi, anchor for ESPN.
