What's Happening in Norwalk, CT…

Norwalk Historical Society holds online chat on oystering

Photographer Bill Whitbeck, a native of East Norwalk, will be giving a virtual discussion on ‘Oystering in Norwalk’ early in March. The free presentation will be uploaded onto Zoom by the Norwalk Historical Society.

Whitbeck will be discussing and showing some of the over 100 photographs of harvesting clam and oysters around the Norwalk Islands from his book, Oystering in Norwalk, Connecticut along with some of his personal photos.

He will talk about his friends the Bloom family, his fascination with oystering and South Norwalk’s Radel oyster building where he had his photography business.

For anyone interested in nautical photographs and maritime history, Mr. Whitbeck’s book can be found at Norwalk’s Copps Island Oysters and online at blurb.com.

Although the talk will be free, the non-profit Norwalk Historical Society would appreciate $5 donations or corporate gifts which can be made online. Registration will be required so the Zoom link can be sent with the confirmation email 24 hours before the event and again 1 hour before. The link will also be available on Eventbrite’s online event page.

Whitbeck, also known as “Oyster Bill”, has coauthored a cookbook “The Joy of Oysters” that includes recipes and shucking, slurping and savoring techniques. He also recently retired from supplying over 200 Seattle area restaurants with seafood for years.

The chat will be Thursday, March 4th from 5:30 pm until 6:30 pm.
