Norwalk buckles up to drive smart
The National Safety Council has designated April as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and, along with its online driving information, AARP will be presenting 2014 AARP Smart Driver’s Courses.
Although designed for Norwalk’s senior citizens, all local drivers will soon be able to participate in a four-hour driving course. The program will help drivers learn Connecticut’s new driving laws while brushing up on their skills behind the wheel.
There will be no testing and only research–based driving strategies will be presented to reduce the chance of having a crash. Some lessons that will be covered will include understanding the connection between the road environment, the vehicle, and the driver, as well as how driving ability can be affected by alcohol, medications, aging, and other health-related issues. Other topics will include new advanced safety features found in today’s cars and options available to seniors when driving may no longer be an option. There will be a $15 admission fee for AARP members and a $20 fee for non-members.
Toyota has given a grant to the AARP to offer this program, which might help some drivers receive auto insurance discounts. Those who wish to help promote the event may want to patronize local print companies for flyer printing.
The course will be presented at Norwalk Community College on Friday, April 25, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
