Library celebrates Black History Month

Norwalk Library will be holding four book signings and one ArtScapades presentation during February in honor of Black History Month.

Next Saturday, February 5, author Shantana Maye will be signing copies of her latest book “28 Ways on How to Advocate for Your Healthcare.”

On February 12, author Sharnette Berrie will be there for a book signing of “I Encouraged Me.” The book contains 65 ways to improve confidence.

February 19 will see author Ny-Aja Boyd signing copies of her book “Grandfather’s Garden,” while Pastor Lenore Jordan will be signing “Peace Portions for Today: a 31-Day Devotional” on February 26.

The book signings will take place from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Saturdays in the Main Floor Reference Department.

On February 9, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, the library’s ArtScapades will present a Zoom presentation called The Harlem Renaissance: From Rural Beginning to Urban Influences.

The lecture will feature three African American artists – Aaron Douglas, Horace Pippin, and Archibald John Motley Jr. – and will discuss their lives and works. The artists were part of the exodus out of the South in the early 20th Century and into the Northeast and Midwest neighborhoods.

This will be a look at Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s and its role in the cultural and intellectual renaissance in Afro-American contributions in politics, theater, literature, fashion, dance, music, and art.

Vivacious colorful pictures of Harlem can be found on notecards, calendars, letterheads, and other items offered by stationery printers.
