Area readies for a night of magic, music, and masks

The Stamford Symphony will be presenting ‘Venetian Carnival’ early in March. The program will be works of Venetian composers who represent the Old World celebration.

Patrons can begin the evening with a pre-concert dinner at the venue. An hour before the curtain goes up, guests can meet with the conductor for a free ‘Behind the Baton’ lecture.

The program for the evening will begin with Albinoni’s Adagio in G minor. It will be followed by Gabrieli’s Canzoni per sonar a quattro. Next will be Mahler’s Adagietto from his Symphony No 5 and Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite. Monteverdi’s Orfeo: Sinfonie e ritornelli will be followed by Vivaldi’s Flute Concerto No. 3 in D Major. The flutist will be Elizabeth Mann. Miss Mann has over 100 recordings to her credit, teaches at The Manhattan School of Music and holds seminars at Juilliard.

The Greenwich Choral Society will be accompanying the symphony in performing Gloria RV 589 by Vivaldi. The 93-year-old society is a membership-based nonprofit organization that’s members come primarily from the Westchester and Fairfield counties. It has performed choral works locally and internationally.

Patrons of the arts here in Norwalk will want to mark their calendars for March 4 and 5. The concerts will be at the Palace Theatre, 61 Atlantic St. in Stamford. Saturday’s concert will be from 8:00 until 10:00 pm and Sunday’s concert will start at 3:00 pm.
