Science delights kids in Parker

Laurel Block, an instructor at Mad Science of Colorado, recently finished a week of studies of science at the PACE Center in Parker, with experiments involving dry ice.

Mad Science of Colorado is a program that provides scientific presentations to schools in the Denver area, using camps and afterschool programs.

Children between the ages of 6 and 12 were involved in a weeklong class about molecules, cells, matter, and chemical properties.

The camp ended with a presentation by Block about sublimation, the process wherein a solid substance instantly becomes a gas without first becoming a liquid. Block began the session discussing whether Pluto is an asteroid or plant, and then drew the attention of the children when she demonstrated experiments that readily turned water into vapor.

She went on with a demonstration of dry ice, which quickly changes the temperature of objects it touches. Then came a test tube with colored bubbling water where, as Block added dish soap to the tube, the children observed how frothy suds were created by the escaping water vapor.

Block said that being involved in Mad Science enables her to connect with kids and get them excited about science. Mad Science of Colorado might benefit from the assistance of Direct Mail printing to promote the upcoming camps in Parker during the months of July and August.
