Parker to install new traffic technology

New equipment that will count the number of vehicles travelling throughout the day on Parker Road will be implemented by the city to help manage traffic flow.

WL Contractors was awarded a contract of $134,000 to install improved traffic signal timing on Parker Road. There is currently a set schedule for the operation of traffic lights on the street. The timing is based on average traffic times during the day, with green lights lasting longer during rush hour than during non-rush hour periods. The new timing will count the number of cars along the street at any time and adjust for changing volumes of traffic.

The manager of public works for Parker, Chris Hudson, said that the devices will keep track of the traffic and send their data to a control room, where the timing of the traffic lights will be adjusted. He added that this is a major step for the town. Although it cannot adjust the lights to traffic demands by the minute, it can make changes for larger traffic issues when unique activities take place, such as an accident on a nearby highway that might push more traffic onto the street.

Flyer printing can be used to inform residents of this upcoming project and how it will benefit their daily commutes.

Director of public works, Tom Williams, expects this adaptive technology will be installed in the near future.
