A project of regional trails begun in Highlands Ranch in 1986 to create a trail to Parker through Lone Tree has recently received a $2m grant from Great Outdoors Colorado.
The Assistant Director of Trails and Parks with Douglas County, Randy Burkhardt, said that these funds will enable completion of the route between the regional trail in Highlands Ranch and the one in the Town of Parker.
The funds will go towards building a segment of eight miles from Lone Tree to Parker, and will join all of northern Douglas County together, he added.
Officials from Lone Tree and Parker expressed their excitement about the grant. Director of Parks, Recreation and Open Space in Parker, Jim Cleveland, said that elected officials and residents in Douglas County are usually very enthusiastic about anything that is done for trails and the outdoors. The Connect Initiatives of Great Outdoors Colorado will improve the overall wellbeing of residents for many years in the future, he added.
The East-West segment is currently in the design phase and construction is scheduled to be completed over the next two years.
Officials from Lone Tree and Parker might want to collaborate with a flyer printing company to create materials that can inform those in northern Douglas County about the grant and the completion of the trail.
