La Palma honors veterans

This Memorial Day, the annual ceremony in La Palma will be paying tribute to military veterans and to those who sacrificed their lives for their country during wartime.

The event will take place at the eternal flame at City Hall, meaning that Thelma and La Palma Avenues will be closed to traffic. It will start off with musical entertainment and will then be followed by speeches and a wreath laying ceremony.

In advance of this event, the city of La Palma held an essay, poetry, and art contest for junior and high schools students under the theme ‘Freedom is not Free’. All of the entries will be displayed during the ceremony and awards will be given to the top three. The winning essays or poems will be read during the event.

In a related activity, the Community Activities and Beautification Committee is collecting letters and cards that will be sent to American troops. The items can be up to 8.5 x 11 inches and participants have until May 29 to submit them.

It is likely that signage will be posted during the day, which will no doubt be obtained from La Palma printing companies.

The Memorial Day Ceremony will take place on May 25 from 9:15 am to 10:30 am. To find out more about the day, or for more details on how to submit letters and cards, call 714-690-3350.
