Catalina Island the focus of exploration

A chance has risen to take a short trip from La Palma to the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, 3720 Stephen M. White Drive in San Pedro to participate in a trip to Catalina Island to make scientific observations and collect specimens on Saturday, June 22.

The trip will take place aboard First String, a 93-foot fishing vessel which departs Los Angeles Harbor at 6:00 am and returns at 6:00 pm. During the trip, there will be opportunities to observe whales, dolphins, sea lions, marine birds, and other sea life.

Traps will be used in an attempt to capture the elusive hagfish (or slime eel) so it can be observed close up. Other specimens will be collected by aquarium divers for observation and discussion. A trip on the island will take place to explore the Isthmus, which is rarely visited by tourists. Participants will also be able to participate in shark baiting in a controlled environment.

Perhaps the trip will inspire participants to become photographers. If so, there will be a Photoshop for photographers class taught at 9:00 am on Sunday, June 23, at the Orange County Photography Center, 590 West Central Avenue in Brea.

This class is open to all levels of photographers who would like to accentuate their photos through the use of Photoshop. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions of the instructors. Those who complete the class and survey will receive a certificate.

All types of class materials can be reproduced quickly and inexpensively by instructors at a local printing company.
