What's Happening in San Diego, CA…

V2G tech offers schools potential new revenue stream

Thanks to a vehicle-to-grid (V2G) pilot program, the El Cajon School District will not only not pay for gas but may also be selling electricity to the grid.

Per the Emergency Load Reduction Program instituted by San Diego Gas & Electric, the company pays $2 per kilowatt-hour to its business customers if they send power to the grid during an energy emergency.

V2G is the name given to projects like this where the city’s solar powered school buses will be able to store electricity that is not needed and then send that excess electricity to the electric utility company.

As Rob Nikolewski reported in The San Diego Union Tibune:

“A fleet of electric-powered school buses in El Cajon can send electricity back to California's grid, thanks to first-of-its kind technology developed by a local company and a partnership with San Diego Gas & Electric.”

Brochure printing services can assist local governments in educating the public about new technology.

V2G electric vehicle batteries use bi-directional technology to charge via solar energy during the day and turn around and discharge the energy, which is emissions-free, back into the electric grid when demand is at its highest.

The buses are charged from the grid overnight, at which time the price of electricity is low. Then the buses run their routes picking up students and dropping them off. The batteries recharge over a two-to-three-hour period and can then discharge their energy back to the grid.
