World premiere one-man show comes to Berkeley

The Berkeley Repertory Theatre is hosting the world premiere of the stage show How Shakespeare Saved My Life.

Written and performed by Jacob Ming-Trent, this autobiographical one-man show is filled with music and a man making peace with his past.

As a natural poet who sees himself as an outcast, the play focuses on Ming-Trent’s search for a place to call home, with both tragedy and comedy unraveling along the way.

Taking influence from artists such as Basquiat, the Notorious B.I.G., and Tupac, the performer combines modern sensibilities with the works of Shakespeare to create a unique blend of a self-reflective performance.

How Shakespeare Saved My Life is a co-production of the Folger Theatre and the Red Bull Theatre and it is directed by Tony Taccone. A handful of the performances will also have a post-show discussion with members of the Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

While the show runs for more than a month, there is a special February 14 matinee that includes a children’s School of Theatre workshop next door, appropriate for K-5 students, which requires a separate reservation and fee.

Stage performances like this may choose to use flyer printing for low-cost promotion of specific shows as well as season schedules.

How Shakespeare Saved My Life is playing from January 23 to March 1 at the Peete’s Theatre at 2025 Addison St. in Berkeley.
