Chart-topping band to rock Berkeley stage

Berkeley’s The Greek Theatre is hosting the worldwide hit-making band Alabama Shakes, with special guest Nathaniel Rateliff, this May.

Raised in their home state’s city of Athens, Alabama Shakes rose to fame with their back-to-back platinum-selling albums, 2012’s Boys & Girls and 2015’s Sound & Color.

Lead vocalist and guitarist Brittany Howard fronts Alabama Shakes, with Heath Fogg on guitar and bassist Zac Cockrell rounding out the group. Their first single, 2012’s “Hold On” catapulted the band to superstardom almost overnight. It was rated as the #1 Best Song of 2012 by Rolling Stone, with the Boys & Girls album entering in at No. 1 on Billboard’s Independent Album chart.

Sound & Color was similarly praised by critics, garnering the band another No. 1 hit album and multiple Grammy Awards. The single “Don’t Wanna Fight” also took home the Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song Grammy Awards.

After 10 years, the band recently reunited, releasing their newest single, “Another Life,” last year. Joining the band for the concert is Nathaniel Rateliff, a prolific singer-songwriter who has been active in the music scene since the late 2000s.
