Berkeley is celebrating Juneteenth with a festival in a few weeks.
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. While the establishment of the national holiday traces its roots to Galveston, Texas in 1865, the localized Juneteenth celebration in Berkeley began in earnest more than 100 years later, with the first Juneteenth-in-Berkeley festival was held in 1987.
Activities at the festival include a Kids Zone designed in part to encourage science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). With attractions such as art programs, dance, rock climbing, and skating, the Kids Zone is also a place offering a variety of entertainment activities.
At the heart of the festival is the RD Bonds Main Stage, featuring both up-and-coming artists and established names in the genres of R&B, gospel, reggae, soul, blues, jazz, and others. It has hosted nationally recognized artists such as H.E.R.
There is also the Lothario Lotho Stage, which gears performances toward young adults. The performances are by local artists who must audition to bring their artistry to the stage, be it in the form of theatre, dance, song, or fashion.
Cultural festivals like this may choose to use banner printing to create vendor Signs, stage decorations, and welcoming marquees.
The Berkeley Juneteenth Festival is taking place on Sunday, June 21 from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm on the corner of Alcatraz Avenue and Adeline Street.
