John Waters, the comedic filmmaker with an eye for kitsch, is coming to The UC Theatre in Berkeley this April.
The one-man show is part of a multi-city tour as part of his 80th birthday celebration.
Waters began as an underground independent filmmaker, highlighting the counter-culture that he was embedded in during his Baltimore upbringing in the 1950s. His early films in the 1970s became subversive, cult classics.
As his career progressed, so too did Waters’ entry into the mainstream. This culminated in teen-friendly, star-studded musicals, including the now-classic Hairspray — which has been adapted into both a Broadway show and a 2007 film remake — and the Johnny Depp-starring Cry Baby.
Waters has since become a staple of pop culture, not only behind the camera, but in front of it. He has appeared in acting roles in everything from TV shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Chucky, to children’s animated fare like Mickey Mouse and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip.
After his show in Berkeley, Waters will take his stage show to other venues around the country, including Portland, Oregon; Napa, California; and Los Angeles.
One-man shows like this may choose to use brochure printing to create audience programs, schedule lists and pamphlets about tour dates.
Going to Extremes: A John Waters 80th Birthday Celebration is happening on April 11 at 8 pm at The UC Theatre Taube Family Music Hall at 2036 University Ave. in Berkeley.
