UC Berkeley to be one third of the regional brain trust

UC Berkeley will be part of one of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) four regional data science “brain trusts”, along with the University of Washington and the UC San Diego.

On November 2, the NSF announced the need for Big Data Regional Innovation Hubs (BE Hubs) to accelerate data science advances via multi-sector collaborations. Ideally, the program will allow for increased opportunities to share resources, ideas and best practices, as well as access a pool of experts and address regional issues and reduce coordination costs.

The West Hub’s resources will be focused on the following themes: precision medicine' metro data science; managing natural resources and natural hazards; and data-enabled scientific discovery and learning. Any Direct Mail printing that UC Berkeley engages in to solicit funds will likely prominently feature the school’s inclusion in the BD Hubs program.

The Big Data Regional Innovation Hubs has for its foundation the National Big Data Research and Development Initiative, which was introduced to the public in 2012.

An award from the NSF of $5 million to the four regional hubs over three years is the latest award in data science for UC Berkeley. Less than four years ago the school was awarded a $10 million NSF award that led to the development of the open-source software programs, among which are Apache Spark, which is used to clarify Big Data.
