The new climate goal for citywide renewable electricity is 100% by 2035, which is 10 years earlier than the state’s goal of 2045. Moreover, the Berkeley mayor set a goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The occasion for announcing these goals was the Global Climate Action Summit that took place in San Francisco September 12 to 14. The event was held to follow the ideals set forth by the Paris Climate Agreement of 2016 and set definitive goals.
Additionally, the mayor has agreed to a purchasing initiative for electric vehicles that will enable access to clean energy infrastructure and vehicles at a reduced cost. Berkeley has also joined several cities in the Bay Area seeking a ban on the transportation of coal through their borders. Mayor Arreguin is quoted as saying:
"By making these commitments, the City of Berkeley is prioritizing working toward reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and moving toward a carbon-free future."
Print shops often receive information of this sort to include in a city’s promotional packets.
A Climate Action Plan adopted in 2009 outlined a plan for Berkeley attaining a zero net energy consumption for all building by 2050, and make public transit, walking, and cycling the main mode of transportation in the city.
