Contact improvisation the subject of intensive Berkeley course

People interested in expanding their contact improvisation skills, meaning movement and dance in response to the movement of others, can attend a multi-day course in April held at The Finnish Hall in Berkeley.

The Deepening Essentials Contact Improvisation workshop is a course where students can learn to improve their movements while interacting with others. The class will cover topics such as grounding, centering, and moving support. Many essential skills are taught at the workshop, including how to fall and land safely from various levels, be emotionally clear when dancing, and stay comfortable when moving upside down.

The course will be taught by Ray Chung and Andrew Harwood. Chung is a certified shiatsu instructor and has studied with industry professionals like Wataru Ohashi and Shizuto Masunaga. Harwood started his dance career in 1975 and has performed with improvisation collectives such as The Echo Case and Discovery Bal. Educators like Chung and Harwood can use business card printing to provide clientele with their contact information.

The workshop will be held from Friday, April 9 to Sunday, April 11. The cost to participate in the course will be $350 per student. Those who attend the lesson are expected to have some prior experience with contact improvisation. Refunds will only be given out up to seven days before the course begins. There will be a total of 15 hours of lessons, with each class starting at 6:00 pm.
