California typo spells opportunity for Michigan library

A spelling error made by the Berkeley, California library’s promotional button supplier proved to be a boon for a Michigan library.

The library here in Berkeley recently made a discovery that benefited its counterpart in the similarly named Berkley, Michigan. That discovery was a box of misspelled buttons saying, “I have a library card” and “Berkley Public Library”. The missing ‘e’ in Berkeley made the buttons unusable here in California but worked perfectly for the Michigan town, the name of which sounds the same but has a different spelling.

This was actually the second time the suburban Detroit library has received a shipment from its West Coast counterpart. The white-on-red buttons were originally ordered a decade ago. For several days the Berkeley Public Library was handing out buttons with the city’s name misspelled to children getting their first library card.

Once discovered, and the Print company notified, the library was left with several Boxes of unusable buttons. Rather than throw them out, enterprising library employees found a home for them with Berkeley’s near namesake city of Berkley, Michigan. Recently, another box of the original shipment was discovered and mailed to Michigan.

The library in Berkley, Michigan, a small city of only 15,000, recently ran out of the originally donated buttons, so the latest arrival of buttons was a particularly pleasant surprise. The Berkley Public Library posted a heartfelt thank you on its Facebook page.
