In 1965, Berkeley students founded Cal in the Capital (CITC), and on October 1, they gathered to mark a half century of the summer internship program.
Thought to be the oldest of Washington’s internship programs, Cal in the Capital, which is administered by the UC Berkeley Public Service Center, has placed over 3,500 interns during the summers since its founding during the Johnson administration.
More than 400 organizations in Washington D.C. use interns, among which are government agencies, think tanks, congressional offices, and nonprofits. Students, with the help of professionally printed Brochures, are able to gather the information necessary to make an informed decision about which organizations they wish to apply to.
Some of the current interns along with around 75 CITC alumni came together at the Bancroft Hotel to revel and reminisce. The keynote address for the gathering was delivered by former Cal in the Capital intern (1982) Mike Williams, who is also Berkeley’s director of intercollegiate athletics.
An anniversary event for Cal in the Capital will be held in Washington, D.C. on October 20, at which the keynote speaker will be Chancellor Nicholas Dirks. The majority of Cal in the Capital internships do not include a salary and the organization hopes to use its golden anniversary to raise an endowment fund in the amount of $1m.Get a Free Quote for Brochures
