Berkeley workshop about sharing community with coyotes

As coyotes continue to make their way into our neighborhoods, Berkeley Animal Care Services and Project Coyote have partnered to present ‘Living with Coyotes’ an educational workshop.

Thanks to their outstanding ability to adapt, coyotes have successfully transitioned into suburban and urban environments. ‘Living with Coyotes’ is designed to help Berkeley residents deal with living with this irrepressible predator.

The range for coyotes has expanded across North America and the animals and are now the continent’s most common and persecuted native carnivore. They have become increasingly comfortable in residential areas, much to the discomfort of those living there.

The workshop, held at the North Berkeley Library, will cover topics such as causes for negative coyote encounters and how to reduce those encounters, as well as strategies for keeping pets safe. The overall thrust of ‘Living with Coyotes’ is to suggest approaches to successful living with wildlife in general and coyotes specifically.

Project Coyote’s Ranching with Wildlife Coordinator Keli Hendricks will detail the resourcefulness of this predator and its role in many ecosystems as a keystone carnivore. A brochure printing detailing the information presented will likely be ordered and made available to attendees, and perhaps the public as well.

Living with Coyotes takes place this Thursday, May 3, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. Those interested should RSVP to ensure a seat.
