Berkeley to offer vocal workshop

The Kitka Institute will hold a two-day singing workshop in February at the Persian Center in Berkeley.

To Sing Like a Bird is a two-part workshop series where attendees can learn how to express themselves freely through Persian traditional songs. People of all backgrounds are allowed to attend the event, and those in the course will receive individual coaching. The instructor of the class is Marjan Vahdat, a voice teacher who started performing as an independent singer and musician in 1995. She has been featured on albums such as “Lullabies from the Axis of Evil” and “Our Garden is Alone”.

The Kitka Institute is a vocal arts ensemble group comprised of women from diverse backgrounds. The group was created in 1979 and has produced 14 recordings on its Diaphonica label. The performers have been featured on programs such as National Geographic World Music and West Coast Live. Members of the Kitka Institute include Janet Kutulas, Kristine Barrett, and Katya Schoenberg.

The singing workshop will be held on Saturday, February 3 and Sunday, February 4 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. One day of the class will cost students $55 each, and admission to both lessons is $100. Only 20 people can attend each workshop. Singers who teach classes that are similar to this may use poster printing to market their vocal workshops to the community.
