Berkeley to give presentation on Beethoven

The UC Berkeley Institute of European Studies will have a lecture in January about Beethoven’s significance in the Habsburg Empire.

Music of War and Victory is a presentation that discusses the role Beethoven’s music played in the Habsburg Empire’s resistance against the Napoleonic onslaught. The musical sources featured in the lecture will include pieces like War Song for the Austrians and The Glorious Moment. The speaker for the program is Philipp Ther, and the moderator will be Nicolas Mathew. Those who attend the college’s presentation are asked to put on a mask.

Phillip Ther works at the University of Vienna and teaches Central European History. He also has experience as a Global Distinguished Professor at New York University and once served as a director at the Institute of East European History. Nicolas Mathew is a Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Professor who teaches subjects like music and humanities. Mathew has written Books such as The Haydn Economy and has been published in the Journal of Musicological Research.

The lecture on Beethoven will be held on Wednesday, January 25 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. The presentation will take place at Moses Hall and is free for people to attend.
