The Silvera Jewelry School in Berkeley will be offering a course on small-scale forging in April.
Bang & Bend: Small Scale Forging is a workshop where students can learn about metalsmithing while they create their own rings. The topics covered during the four-day course include tapering and simple model-making. Those who sign up for the lesson are expected to know about basic jewelry-making skills, such as smoldering, drilling, or how to use a flex shaft. All students must show the jewelry school that they have been vaccinated.
The instructor for the workshop is Andy Cooperman, who is an experienced teacher and artist who has exhibited his work at venues like Stephen F. Austin State University and the National Ornamental Metals Museum. He has been a presenter at the Society of North American Goldsmiths’ conference and was selected as a keynote speaker by the International Society of Glass Bead Makers. Cooperman also teaches the More Than A Drill: Understanding the Flex Shaft workshop.
The forging class will be held from Friday, April 28th to Monday, May 1st. Each session will be from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The cost to take Cooperman’s class is $925 per person, and the kits for the lesson will cost $25. People may bring their own hammers or hand tools to the workshop. Art schools like this may use printing services to share their educational programs with others.
