Mesa to feel the heat with salsa event

Mesa Sloan Park, at 2330 W Rio Salado Parkway, will be holding the 36th Annual My Nanas Best Tasting Salsa Challenge in April.

Checking for updates is recommended, with the coronavirus situation putting paid to many events in the coming weeks. Proceeds will go to Arizona Bleeding Disorders.

A Too Hot to Trot 5k will start the festivities. Pre-registration will be $30 until the end of March, $35 until the evening before the race, and $40 on Race Day. Race Day registration and packet pickup will start at 6:30 am in the park. A pre-race briefing will be at 7:50 am and runners begin at 8:00 am. Walkers and joggers will begin at 8:05 am. The course will begin and end in the park. Awards will be given to three overall female and male finishers, and in seven age divisions.

Amenities will include Too Hot to Trot T-Shirts featuring this year’s event graphic design, an early pass to the Salsa Challenge and music. After the race, participants are invited to the Runners VIP area for a free breakfast and beverages.

At the Challenge, local amateur and professional chefs from around the region will try their hand at creating the perfect salsa. They will be judged by a panel of salsa experts along with festivalgoers who will be able to eat all the salsa and chips they can consume.

All being well, the Salsa Challenge will begin at 10:00 am on April 18, and wind down around 5:00 pm.
