The Dia de Los Muertos Festival is coming later this month. The event will be free, although arts, crafts, and merchandise with the ‘Day of the Dead’ theme will be available for purchase.
Live entertainment will be provided by high-energy regional and local acts. Over the years such groups as Ballet Folklorio Amistad, Mariachi Corazon de Phoenix, Sol Gitana, and Noemy Esparza and Nosotrosound have been headliners. This year’s performers have not been named yet.
Individuals and groups – especially families – are invited to participate in a Day of the Dead display decorating contest that will be sponsored by the Mesa Association of Hispanic Citizens, Mesa Arts Center, and the Consulate General of Mexico in Phoenix. Displays for the Day of the Dead usually have special traditional elements, with arches signify the connection between death and life, and candles representing hope. Flowers are to remind participants that life is temporary, water reminds them of purity and life, while incense (usually copal) is said to rid the area of negative spirits.
The first three winning entries will receive tickets to local museums and Mesa Art Center performances, as well as Gift Certificates to the MAC Educational Classrooms. Each participating group may want to get pictures of their displays for later poster printing.
The festival is scheduled for Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25, at the Mesa Arts Centre, 1 East Main Street, Mesa. Saturday’s hours will be 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sunday’s will be noon to 5:00pm.Get a Free Quote for Gift Certificates
