Mesa gets rhythm

Billy Cobham will be bringing his Art of the Rhythm Section retreat to the area this month.

The weeklong event will be a special music enrichment program for students, educators and music lovers. Playing more cohesively and more effectively as a group will be the focus.

The coaching team that will assist Mr. Cobham will be Tim Landers on bass, Scott Tibbs on keyboard, Paul Hanson on sax and bassoon, Fareed Haque on guitar, and Dom Famularo on drums. Famularo will also be the moderator. Additional special guest coaches will be Kenny Barron (piano) and Ron Carter (bass) on Wednesday and Lee Oskar (harmonica) on Thursday.

Students will participate in interactive lectures, discussions, video analysis, and breakout groups. They will also be involved in jam sessions and playing exercises.

Some elements that will be covered will be remaining in control of syncopation, becoming aware of harmonious musical character, controlling tempo, listening during a performance, and staying in sync.

On Wednesday, ‘The Art of the Three in Conversation and Song’ will be presented by Billy, Kenny Baton, and Ron Carter. Billy and the Crosswinds Project Band will put on a performance Saturday night.

Anyone going will want to remember Business Cards to exchange with other guests for possible future gigs or jams.

The retreat is slated for July 22 at 5:30 pm and July 23 through 28 from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm at the Mesa Arts Center, 1 E Main Street.
